Southern Braai – Fermented Vintage BBQ Sauce
I’ve tried a variety of sauces from ADF, and this “mildest” gift pack is awesome! Big flavor and just enough heat so it’s not bland. Excellent presentation with the gift box too, this would be a perfect gift for anyone that likes to try new varieties of hot sauce. I’ve very much enjoyed the flavors of all the ones I’ve tried so far. These “mildest” ones are all great! Definitely recommended!
You get four of this company’s hot sauce in this gift box. All are very tasty.
1) Southern Braai – this is a semi-sweet tomato based sauce that is labeled ‘fermented vintage BBQ sauce’. The fermented adds a bit of a bite. It has a mild heat that fades in.
2) Sweet Dream sauce – this is a very sweet chili sauce with a mild heat.
3) Jalanasco Fermented Jalapeno – very vinegary green sauce. The green comes from fermented jalapenos. Low medium heat.
4) Lemon & Garlic Peri-Peri – you will taste the lemon and the garlic. Cane sugar is the first ingredient so this is pretty sweet. Heat is medium.
I love these sauces from African Dream. While there is some heat here, it is always flavor first.
Wow these are good. I am not a fan of things that are too hot because I only taste spice and no flavor, so the mild box was the PERFECT mix for me. The sauces came well packed in a nice box. I tried one flavor of this brand a few months ago and now I am hooked.
Sweet dreams: Super thick like jam. Very very sweet but has a great spiciness to it that balances it out. Absolutely loved this on rice and tacos.
Jalanacso: Very vinegary with a little kick of spice. It’s excellent on chicken, burgers, pizza, fries, sandwiches, eggs, pretty much everything. Very thin and watery so more like a sauce than a dip.
Braai BBQ Sauce: A very mild taste with no spice at all. It has a great subtle bbq flavor. It is great as a marinade because the flavor is so light.
Garlic lemon Peri Peri: WOW so good! Has a little spice to it but not so much that it’s too hot to taste the flavors. My second favorite! It is thicker and reminds me off buffalo wing sauce. The flavor is incredible and has a little zing from the lemon. It really tastes like mild wing sauce to me.
Overall everything I’ve tried from this brand has been amazing. My favorites are the jalapeño and the garlic lemon and I will be getting them again for a third time after they run out because now I can’t be without them.
These sauces would make a truly amazing gift for anyone. They arrived in a sweet zebra themed bag, which held a lovely gift box.
You also get a company themed postcard, sticker, and promotional materials that explain the wildlife conservation aspect.
I am enjoying the first one I tried, the lemon garlic peri-peri.
It does have a kick, but is not painful; moreover, the lemon juice gives it a bright flavor. It’s a thicker sauce with a lot of flavor, you definitely taste the garlic, and a tiny bit of tang from the lemon.
I’ve been enjoying it on chicken, but it would work on a wide range of meats. I could see it having broad appeal.
I absolutely recommend this set. They give you a fun way to try a range of options as you search for your favorite one.
The presentation, theme, quality, and connection to a wildlife charity also make this an absolutely wonderful gift idea for anyone with an interest in cooking, animals, and/or Africa.
I picked the mild pack just because this brand does some great things with their flavors, and when it’s too spicy you can’t taste the flavor. These are so good! I had the Southern Brai on some chicken and rice today and it’s so good!
Because this is a set of four different sauces, I’ll review them separately! Collectively, though, the presentation was very nice.
Though they’ll be going on and in various foods as they get used up, I’ve tried all of these alone and mixed into hummus to try and give them all equal taste tests, without strongly flavored foods interfering with that.
Jalanasco Fermented Jalapeno: Super sour (but good!) with more of a kick to it. The spice level on this one is high enough that I’ll likely use it in smaller quantities to spice things up.
Lemon & Garlic Peri-Peri: The lemon comes through and adds a nice flavor to the sauce, so it’s not “”just”” hot. This is probably my second favorite sauce out of the four.
Southern Braai: This one is sour, and the flavor of the cloves comes through quite a bit. Because of the clove flavor, it reminds me of fall.
Sweet Dream Sauce: I got this set to review because it contained more of it! This is my favorite sauce. Being only a two on the scale, I like how light the spice level is, so I can use a lot of the sauce and enjoy the flavor of the sauce, without the spice being overwhelming. It has a mild heat, but almost a dessert-like flavor, too. It’s really good, and I think is the most unique out of this set. Though, they’re all unique and good!
